Reading Zechariah

Jerusalem will be the City of God and of the World (Reading Zechariah)

“Jerusalem shall be inhabited as towns without walls, because of the multitude of men and livestock in it.” Zechariah 2:4 NKJV

Jerusalem is going to be the City of the World. It will be a city without walls, because no walls can contain it with the large numbers of people and livestock inhabiting it; there will be no walls to keep people in, or stop people from coming. Imagine the city growing in population and expanding outwards each day. Every person who comes is accommodated without any limitations of resource or habitability because God provides. Soon, Jerusalem will expand and grow into a sprawling city that spans hundreds of kilometers.

For I,’ says the Lord , ‘will be a wall of fire all around her, and I will be the glory in her midst.’ ” Zechariah 2:5 NKJV

Yet, the people of Jerusalem need not fear about their security. Although there will be no walls around it to protect the city, the Lord promised that there will be a wall of fire around it. It will be as of the days of old when the Pillar of Fire by night (Exodus 13) was with the people as they left Egypt, leading the people of Israel to cross the Red Sea and standing between them and their enemies. It would be like the fire of the Lord as He descended on Mount Sinai to be in the midst of the people when He gave them the commandments (Exodus 29). The presence of the Lord will be Holy and could not be entered by anyone who has not been cleansed and consecrated or they will die. It will be as in the days of Solomon when the fire of the Lord descended and filled Solomon’s Temple (2 Chronicles 7), consuming the burnt offerings and sacrifices and stayed with them. This wall of fire that Zechariah saw will be the Glory of God living in the midst of the people in Jerusalem.
